What is the Donam Plasma Association?
The “Donam Plasma” Association is a non-governmental organization, established in Romania in 2021, with the main purpose of promoting human plasma donation for the manufacture of medicines.
Plasma collection in Romania
At present, Romania does not collect plasma for fractionation and does not send for fractionation human plasma recovered from whole blood. This, despite the fact that data presented either by officials of the national transfusion system or by independent experts, show that Romania annually destroys over 50,000 liters of plasma.
Romanian patients' access to medicines derived from human plasma
According to the data on average consumption in the last five years, data presented by the Romanian health authorities, Romanian patients received between 2016 and 2021 approximately:
210 kg of normal human immunoglobulin
2000 kg of albumin
40.000.000 IU of plasma coagulation factor VIII
Plasma for Romania - What can we do?
The “Donam Plasma” Association aims to mobilize the resources and skills of the private sector, which will finance, develop and operate the first 10 plasmapheresis centers in Romania, able to collect sufficient quantities of human plasma, from which to manufacture the necessary medicines for Romanian patients.
Who are the main actors that can play a role in collecting plasma for the manufacture of medicines needed by Romanian patients?
How will we select the transfusion centers that will benefit from our support?
From the date of this brochure until March 31th, 2022, any of the 40 transfusion centers already authorized may express its intention to partnership in order to enter the evaluation and selection procedure, after which we will select the first 10 of them with which we open and operate the first 10 plasmapheresis centers, in which we collect plasma for fractionation, from Romanian donators.
How do we select the private sponsors?
Probably the most important are the private partners, respectively the companies with experience in collecting and processing convalescent plasma.
